Communications Coordinator
DC - Washington
Opportunity Overview
We live in a 24/7 fast, dynamic and sometimes hard-hitting media environment where no two days are ever the same. We are looking for a poised and polished -- not to mention unflappable -- communications professional who can be the voice of G4S on an exciting new contract with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
As Communications Coordinator, you will manage a variety of media requests with great tact and diplomacy, ensuring that our pristine image is protected while maintaining full transparency within the terms of the contract. You will respond to regular and ad-hoc reporting requests and other inquiries from FOIA and NGOs, ensuring that all communications are in accordance with contract specifications. You will also manage communications within the contract as you drive best practices internally and build bridges externally.
To be a good fit for this opportunity you will bring solid media experience. With an abundance of organization and razor-sharp attention to details, you'll not only handle the day-to-day communication details, but also be able to grasp the big picture impact of your activities. Of course, you'll also be adept at dealing with the inherent sensitivities of confidential information and showcase the professional maturity, integrity and judgment to know what can be shared with the outside world and what needs to be kept under wraps.
You will be working for G4S and enjoy the stability and resources of a $9 billion company, the world's leading international security solutions group, operating in over 110 countries with more than 585,000 employees. Our values focus on Best People -- we always take care to employ the best people, develop their competence, provide opportunity and inspire them to live our values.
What Else You'll Bring to the Table
In addition to the qualifications detailed above, you must have:
- US citizenship.
- Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations or related field.
- Minimum 2-3 communications/media related experience with government, NGOs or non-profits (not just general communications experience).
- Experience with traditional and electronic communications tools, vehicles, and techniques, including web, email, radio, television, video, and print.
- Excellent writing and copy-editing skills.
- Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with external and internal stakeholders; must be a strong team player who can also work independently as needed.
- Strong organization and multi-tasking capabilities with the ability to work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
- Computer proficiency in a Microsoft Office suite environment; Desktop publishing experience is a plus.
Our contract with DHS ICE requires that we conduct extensive "suitability" background checks, and they will conduct their own check of all candidates' suitability for entry on duty. To pass both checks, you will need, at minimum:
- A clean credit history and good current credit standing.
- A criminal record clear of felonies or misdemeanors of a moral or egregious nature.
- A clean driving record.
- A negative result on an initial drug screen and subsequent random drug tests.
With our technical and geographical infrastructure, along with proven success on our current ICE contract, we are positioned extremely well to be awarded and exceed the performance expectations of the Intensive Supervision and Appearance Program (ISAP II) contract scheduled to be awarded on July 20th, 2009. We will look to you to begin work with G4S on the ISAP II contract beginning August 3rd, 2009 and join our week-long training program in Dallas, Texas. You will play a key role in our company's expansion as a world-class government services provider.
What's in It for You
- Ground floor opportunity to make a discernible impact -- your communication savvy, strategic thinking, and hands-on execution will allow you to be a pivotal member of a ground floor initiative.
- Career development -- we are projecting significant growth in the new contract; for example, the plans currently call for opening more than ten new offices next year alone. Your success in this role could set you up to pursue a number of career trajectories, depending on your ambition and aptitude. Our strong commitment to training and employee development includes: 1) initial training consisting of both informative and required DHS/ICE training; and 2) ongoing training using both face-to-face and online learning systems.
- Diverse, meaningful work -- you'll enjoy a diverse mix of challenges daily as you leverage your resourcefulness and creativity in addressing a variety of inquiries and other requests. You will be part of a program that provides an alternative to detention for authorized program participants, and support ICE's mission of upholding US law while respecting participants' rights.
- Leveraging technology to create a great work environment -- while G4S is a security solutions company, technology is a core part of those solutions. We also take a proactive approach to using technology to the best advantage for our employees as well as our customers.
- Excellent compensation -- we offer competitive salaries and a comprehensive benefits package for our full-time employees, including paid vacation, holiday and sick time, medical, flexible spending plan, dental and 401(k) matching benefits.
