Technical Report Writer
DC - Washington
Opportunity Overview
This is a high impact opportunity to show off your technical writing skills and flex your analytical muscle as you distill and disseminate technical data -- from multiple sources -- into accurate and timely reports. This role will put you in the middle of an exciting start-up -- you'll join a new contract with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and be on the ground floor. We're hiring with an eye on the future and are seeking impact players who can thrive in our high-velocity environment and grow with the company.
Serving as the project manager for data reporting on this contract, you will not only drive routine (weekly, monthly and quarterly) reporting requests, but also proactively respond to a variety of ad-hoc requests. We will also look to you to conduct trend analysis as you unlock the power of vast volumes of data to provide better decision-making support, driving actionable recommendations to help us enhance our systems/processes and finding innovative ways to better serve the reporting needs of our customer.
To be a good fit for this opportunity you will bring solid expertise in technical writing, preferably with prior background in the federal government arena. Of course, you'll also need the interpersonal savvy -- not to mention poise and professionalism -- to serve as a liaison between the customer and diverse internal stakeholders as you proactively manage change, staying on top of the different "moving pieces" and delivering a quality product.
You will be working for G4S and enjoy the stability and resources of a $9 billion company, the world's leading international security solutions group, operating in over 110 countries with more than 585,000 employees. Our values focus on Best People -- we always take care to employ the best people, develop their competence, provide opportunity and inspire them to live our values.
What Else You'll Bring to the Table
In addition to the qualifications detailed above, you must have:
- US citizenship.
- Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline.
- Minimum 3-5 years experience in technical writing.
- Ability to interpret and translate complex processes into user-friendly documentation.
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills, including the ability to analyze, design and collate data for a large program initiative.
- Ability to run SQL queries and extract data from multiple systems.
- Team player mentality and ability to collaborate with cross-functional groups throughout the organization.
- The ability to learn new things quickly with minimal direction.
- Computer proficiency in a Microsoft Office environment, including advanced knowledge of Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access and MS Visio.
- General understanding of government contracts is a plus.
Our contract with DHS ICE requires that we conduct extensive "suitability" background checks, and they will conduct their own check of all candidates' suitability for entry on duty. To pass both checks, you will need, at minimum:
- A clean credit history and good current credit standing.
- A criminal record clear of felonies or misdemeanors of a moral or egregious nature.
- A clean driving record.
- A negative result on an initial drug screen and subsequent random drug tests.
With our technical and geographical infrastructure, along with proven success on our current ICE contract, we are positioned extremely well to be awarded and exceed the performance expectations of the Intensive Supervision and Appearance Program (ISAP II) contract scheduled to be awarded on July 20th, 2009. We will look to you to begin work with G4S on the ISAP II contract beginning August 3rd, 2009 and join our week-long training program in Dallas, Texas. You will play a key role in our company's expansion as a world-class government services provider.
What's in It for You
- High impact/visibility -- far from being pigeonholed into routine report writing work, you'll collaborate with a variety of internal stakeholders as you drive quality assurance and coach the team on innovative ways to optimize our reporting environment. We are also in the process of automating our systems and your efforts to streamline our business reporting will be keenly watched by our executive leadership team and you'll garner recognition for your contributions.
- Career development -- we are projecting significant growth in the new contract; for example, the plans currently call for opening more than ten new offices next year alone. Your success in this role could set you up to pursue a number of career trajectories, depending on your ambition and aptitude. Our strong commitment to training and employee development includes: 1) initial training consisting of both informative and required DHS/ICE training; and 2) ongoing training using both face-to-face and online learning systems.
- Diverse, meaningful work -- you'll leverage your resourcefulness and creativity in addressing a variety of reports on a day-to-day basis. The services you provide will represent an alternative to detention for program participants, and support ICE's mission of upholding US law while respecting participants' rights.
- Leveraging technology to create a great work environment -- while G4S is a security solutions company, technology is a core part of those solutions. We also take a proactive approach to using technology to the best advantage for our employees as well as our customers.
- Excellent compensation -- we offer competitive salaries and a comprehensive benefits package for our full-time employees, including paid vacation, holiday and sick time, medical, flexible spending plan, dental and 401(k) matching benefits.
More About Your Role
If you're a good fit for this position, you already know most of what this job entails. However, to be sure we're providing a complete picture, here are some details.
Reporting directly to the Quality Improvement Director (QID), you will join us at our DC office in the heart of the nation's capital.
This role will evolve over time, but in general, your responsibilities include:
- Supporting the QID in developing and establishing quality and operating policies and procedures, including consolidating draft documents into final documents that meet regulatory requirements and assisting in evaluating responses to internal or external audit compliance findings.
- Amending or modifying written policies and procedures for clarity and content.
- Extracting, compiling, analyzing and delivering reports from multiple data systems and acting as the project manager for data reporting on the contract.
- Performing trend analysis, ad hoc reporting, SQL commands and basic data mining to extract information in an advanced capacity to enhance reporting.
- Performing data entry using word processing, spreadsheet or database commands and format material as required.
- Creating data directories/subdirectories for both file and report generation retrieval purposes.
- Examining existing information-processing systems to evaluate effectiveness and developing enhanced systems to improve production or workflow as required.
- Preparing workflow charts and diagrams to specify in detail, the operations to be performed by equipment, programs and personnel where necessary.
- Maintaining documentation standards by developing a guide pursuant to regulatory requirements and standards for written supervisory and operating policies and procedures.
- Maintaining process flows for ISO 9001:2008 when achieved.
- Providing technical review of all monthly, quarterly and annual reports submitted to ICE assuring compliance with the contract.
- Securing files and following all G4S compliance procedures.
Keys to Success
Your success in this role will largely derive from your technical writing and analytical abilities -- and the help of your inquisitive nature and keen attention to detail -- as we look to you to distill key findings from complex analyses and propose insightful solutions that will help us achieve our reporting objectives. Other facets of success are to:
- Showcase a customer-centric attitude and proactive initiative in seeing what needs to be done and doing it (such as delivering reports that the client may not have even asked for) and recommending ways to best present technical content or improve processes.
- Collaborate effectively with people at all levels of our organization, translating technical concepts into practical language, and adjusting your style to different groups.
- Learn the nuances of our reporting systems (this includes staying sharp on your database/SQL skills) and coach internal stakeholders on ways to maximize its potential.
- Deliver on multiple, competing priorities and challenging timelines (we typically have a 4-hour turnaround window for ad-hoc requests) while maintaining "grace under pressure" at all times.
- Maintain robust attention to detail without losing sight of the big picture and how those details fit in; you'll not only assist in planning our strategic goals but also take an active role in ensuring we achieve them.
If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, and you meet the minimum qualifications, we want to hear from you!
